How it didn't work... and how it did work!
Lorenzo died in 2008, there is a very interesting BBC news article from 2004, where we read:
Augusto Odone turned his formidable drive into another area of research - trying to regenerate the damaged nerves in the brain.
Dr Moser, however, was not prepared to give up. He decided to focus on boys who had the ALD gene but had not yet developed the symptoms.
Perhaps the oil could prevent the disease ever appearing. Boys like Barry's younger brother Glenn were put on the oil.
After 10 years the results are finally through. And they are dramatic.
Of 120 boys in the trial 83 are still free of the disease. Lorenzo's Oil is showing a significant preventative effect.
According to Dr Moser taking the oil reduced the chance of getting the disease by half.
And Glenn Stafford, the first non-symptomatic patient to be out on the oil is now 21 years old and fully fit.
"If they hadn't caught the disease and put me on the oil then I don't think I would be here now," he said.
"So it's due to the oil that I'm here now."
So now there is real hope. Tests can identify boys with the gene, and the oil gives them a hugely improved chance of escaping the horrific disease.
And Augusto Odone? He's delighted with the findings. But he's still, 15 years on, looking for a cure for his son who lies at home, paralyzed by the ALD.
You must read the entire article to understand the reality. Children who were given Lorenzo's oil after suffering symptoms did not benefit but those younger who showed no symptoms were successful and many are adults now living out their lives in full. So as it is with other illness get to repairing the bodies cells and time and amount is important as it is in finding that the oil does in fact work when given before symptoms appear.
The movie Lorenzo's Oil, which is based on a true story, is to show you the opposite which is love and action on the part of Lorenzo's parents who would not give up on finding a cure for their son. Industrializing of hospitals has no love. Wikipedia writes:

They set out on a mission to find a treatment to save their child. But they persisted, setting up camp in medical libraries, reviewing animal experiments, badgering researchers, questioning top doctors all over the world, and even organizing an international symposium about the disease. Despite dead ends of research, the horror of watching their son's health decline, and being surrounded by skeptics (including the coordinators of the support group they attended), they persisted until they finally hit upon a therapy involving adding a certain kind of oil.

Another mom and dad of a child with ADL in the movie, as the fundraiser's support group leader was more interested in their Fundraising program than their son who lied there in bed alone, without love to warm his heart. The fundraiser's and parents were only for the science -- and money they raised from this illness suffered by children all over the world, science rejected separating oils then combining oils is what worked. Michaela Odone found a study about: Polish rats who had a fatty acid storage decease (biosyntheses). When the rats were deprived of a specific fat in their diet their body cells compensated by over producing it. The diet was useless in less they can stop it from over producing as in slowing down biosynthesis, the concept of fatty acid manipulation. They stopped the rats producing one kind of fat by loading their diet with another kind so maybe they could stop Lorenzo's body from producing saturated C24 and C26 by loading his diet with another kind of fat less harmful. Rats and humans are the same. A cooking oil had to have something taken out of it before combining two cooking oils and as it turned out recently I found new results that it did not really save anyone who already had the illness activated but saved others who were born with ADL and were treated before the illness started as in the article to the right.

"I claim the right to fight for my kid's life. And no doctor, no researcher, no bloody foundation, has the right to stop me from asking questions which might help me save him! And you have no right to stop the sharing of information! … They are so powerful that you would be silent? They are not gods!" -Lorenzo's Oil, a movie based on a true story.
The Lorenzo's together did research and did find the cure for their sons illness while still facing many of the elite educated who were against them, but they continued and Lorenzo lived to be 30 and died the day after his 30th birthday, in 2008, and he is considered to have lived longer than anyone else with this ALD condition. His illness already active could only benefit minimally as it works best if a child is diagnosed before symptoms appear. As you heard in this short trailer "It's just two cooking oils".
