THE APPLE IS THE fruit of the species Malus domestica in the rose family. It is one of the most widely cultivated tree fruits, and the most widely known of the many members of genus Malus that are used by humans. The tree originated in Western Asia, where its wild ancestor is still found today. There are more than 7,500 known cultivars of apples, resulting in a range of desired characteristics. At least 55 million tons of apples were grown worldwide in 2005, with a value of about $10 billion.
Though the forbidden fruit in the Book of Genesis is not named, the common tradition has been that it was an apple that Eve ate with Adam. Perhaps no biblical food is more famous and full of symbolic value. I feel the apple is not the fruit they ate, but because the apple is a delicious food and pleasent to the eye, it makes for a good illustration of how something like that can lead us astray and remove our minds from focusing on the one who created it.
Moving on to other parts of the Bible, the apple gets very high ratings as a wonderful food with healthy benefits, for we read: "Strengthen me with raisins, refresh me with apples, for I am faint with love" (Song of Solomon 2:5). And we also read: "The vine is dried up and the fig tree is withered; the pomegranate, the palm and the apple tree— all the trees of the field—are dried up. Surely the joy of mankind is withered away" (Joel 1:12). An apple a day may keep the doctor away, but without the apple, surely, our joy may be "withered away."
Apples contain numerous phytonutrients that function as antioxidants that help keep the heart healthy. These include quercetin, catechin, phloridzin and chlorogenic acid. The skins of organic apples are great containers of these nutrients. The fiber, such as that from an apple, studies have shown can help keep your LDL cholesterol levels under control. In studies, as little as two ounces of apple per day (less than ½ of a medium-sized apple) have been seen to be beneficial Flavonoids are another reason to bring apples into a heart-supportive diet. In studies, "cloudy" apple juice, which contains pulp from whole apples, is clearly better at supporting your cardiovascular system than juice without the pulp. Since so much of the fiber and antioxidant and flavonoid content is contained in the pulp, this finding makes sense, and underscores the importance of the whole, natural food form. We juice the apple with the skin on however the core contains seeds which are cinide and prefer to eliminate the core all together.
Apples have shown to provide a reduced risk of lung cancer in women. From a large collection of laboratory studies, there is good reason to believe apples may be helpful in reducing risk of colon cancer and breast cancer also. One study performed this year by Dr. Liu revealed that fresh apples and apple extract inhibited breast tumor growth in lab animals. Apples and apple extract decreased compounds in the animals that are cancer producing. Dr. Liu began studying apples for fighting cancer in 2000. Colon cancer was also found to respond to treatment with apple extract. The apple compounds protected DNA from damage and blocked carcinogens. Cells treated with apple extract showed less propensity to metastasize. Beneficial compounds in apples could also find a place in chemotherapy. Cancer cells can become resistant to treatment with chemotherapy drugs. Researchers reveals apples can block the action of a protein that makes cancer cells resistant to chemotherapy. The protein, kappa B (NF-KB), was blocked by apple extract and curcumin. Resveratrol was also studied, but did not produce the same results.
Be strong and very courageous. Be careful to obey all the law my servant Moses gave you; do not turn from it to the right or to the left, that you may be successful wherever you go. Do not let this Book of the Law depart from your mouth; meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do everything written in it. Then you will be prosperous and successful
(Joshua 1:7-8)
An Apple a Day....
In an article about Dr. Liu in Cornell Food scientist, in the journal Nature, we read: “Liu and his colleagues credited phytochemicals -- antioxidants -- in fresh apples with inhibiting human liver and colon cancer cell growth. Antioxidants help prevent cancer by mopping up cell-damaging free radicals and inhibiting the production of reactive substances that could damage normal cells and that is obviously what we already learned about the onion."
He also “found that tumor incidence was reduced by 17, 39 and 44 percent in rats fed the human equivalent of one, three or six apples a day, respectively, over 24 weeks," says Rui Hai Liu, Cornell associate professor of food science and lead author of the study.
On a side note, contrary to juicer commericals, where they fit an entire apple into the juicer, we highly diagree, for apple seeds are known to contain cyanide. We suggest you remove the core and seeds and just juice the rest. And there is no need to peel the apple.
Ten years ago, Joni Olive-Badalian fought cancer and won--with prayer and Juicing. She had surgery and a little chemo, but the doctor said her cancer was gone prior to this. The rest was so that it never returned. He then asked her husband George, "What denomination of faith are you?"
There are many great ways to enjoy juice! Ijuiced and reversed my cancer. I am not a doctor, but merely am offering some great tasting and nutrient packed fresh fruit and veggie drinks. Enjoy!
