THE COMMON FIG (FICUS CARICA) is a large shrub or small tree native to southwest Asia and the Mediterranean region (from Afghanistan to Portugal). The sap of the fig's green parts is an irritant to human skin.

When fruits are dried, the nutrients are then concentrated as the small packages make it easier to eat more of them. For example, it's easier to consume 30 raisins than it would be to eat 30 grapes. This, then, makes it easier to consume major amounts of these health boosting nutrients. This is also true of dried figs, and they are much the same. Whole, raw figs don't offer notable amounts of nutrients. But the nutrients in dried figs can very fast start to add up. Just a quarter of a cup of dried figs can provide around four grams of fiber, vitamin K and many minerals.

Heart Health
In studies, fig leaves have lowered levels of triglycerides (a form in which fats circulate in the bloodstream), while in in vitro studies, fig leaves inhibited the growth of cancer cells. Low consumption of potassium-rich foods, especially when eaten together with a high intake of sodium, can lead to hypertension. In the Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension (DASH) study, after eight weeks, the group that ate the nutrient enhanced diet lowered their blood pressure by an average of 5.5 points (systolic) over 3.0 points (diastolic). Figs are a good source of potassium, an important mineral to help control blood pressure.
Cancer Protection
Figs are beneficial for post-menopausal women and for those who have breast cancer. Research reveals that women, who consume fiber-rich fruits regularly, reduce their own chances of getting cancer. Tests show that fig leaves have the ability to inhibit the growth of cancer cells. Further research is needed to confirm the validity of these tests. Results of a prospective study involving 51,823 postmenopausal women for an average of 8.3 years showed a 34% reduction in breast cancer risk for those consuming the most fruit fiber compared to those consuming the least. Moreover, in the subgroup of women who had ever used hormone replacement, those consuming the most fiber, especially cereal fiber, had a 50% reduction in their risk of breast cancer compared to those consuming the least. Fruits the most packed full of fiber include apples, dates, figs, pears and prunes.

The word of the LORD came again to Zechariah: “This is what the LORD Almighty said: ‘Administer true justice; show mercy and compassion to one another. Do not oppress the widow or the fatherless, the foreigner or the poor. Do not plot evil against each other’ (Zech 7:8-10).

Figs & Adam and Eve

In the Book of Genesis in the Bible, Adam and Eve clad themselves with fig leaves (Genesis 3:7) after eating the "forbidden fruit" from the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil.
Likewise, fig leaves, or depictions of fig leaves, have long been used to cover the genitals of nude figures in painting and sculpture.
Often these fig leaves were added by art collectors or exhibitors long after the original work was completed. The use of the fig leaf as a protector of modesty or shield of some kind has entered the language.
The biblical quote "each man under his own vine and fig tree" (1 Kings 4:25) has been used to denote peace and prosperity. It was commonly quoted to refer to the life that would be led by settlers in the American West, and was used by Theodor Herzl in his depiction of the future Jewish Homeland: "We are a commonwealth. In form it is new, but in purpose very ancient. Our aim is mentioned in the First Book of Kings: 'Judah and Israel shall dwell securely, each man under his own vine and fig tree, from Dan to Beersheba".

Joni's Testimony

Ten years ago, Joni Olive-Badalian fought cancer and won--with prayer and Juicing. She had surgery and a little chemo, but the doctor said her cancer was gone prior to this. The rest was so that it never returned. He then asked her husband George, "What denomination of faith are you?"
