THE ORANGE IS THE CITRIS aurantium Risso and its fruit. The orange is a hybrid of ancient cultivated origin, possibly between pomelo (Citrus maxima) and mandarin (Citrus reticulata).

Oranges originated in Southeast Asia. The fruit of Citrus sinensis is called sweet orange to distinguish it from Citrus aurantium, the bitter orange. The name is thought to ultimately derive from the Sanskrit for the orange tree, with its final form developing after passing through numerous intermediate languages. In a number of languages, it is known as a "Chinese apple".

Heart Health

In one study with 24 healthy men at risk for cardiovascular disease, at the end of the study, researchers found that when the volunteers drank either the daily glass of orange juice or the hesperidin-fortified drink, they had much better endothelial function and lower diastolic blood pressure (the lower number on a blood pressure reading) than when they drank the non-hesperidin beverage. The World Health Organization's recent draft report, "Diet, Nutrition and the Prevention of Chronic Disease," finds that a diet that features citrus fruits also offers protection against cardiovascular disease due to citrus fruits' folate, which is necessary for lowering levels of the cardiovascular risk factor, homocysteine; their, potassium, which helps lower blood pressure, protecting against stroke and cardiac arrhythmias; and the vitamin C, carotenoids and flavonoids found in citrus fruits, all of these have been identified as having protective cardiovascular effects. An orange has over 170 different phytonutrients and over 60 flavonoids, many of these have been shown to have antiinflammatory, anti-tumour and blood clot inhibiting properties, as well as strong antioxidant effects.

Cancer Protection

In an article entitled "Oranges, bananas and turmeric prevent leukaemia", we read:

Children who ate oranges, orange juice or bananas between four to six times a week during their first two years of life had a significantly reduced risk of developing the cancer, revealed the observational study by US researchers. Previous studies on childhood leukaemias have not examined the effects of the overall diet in this way, focusing more on possible risk foods like cured meats. "Our study is unique, and we have elucidated a significant protective association with the consumption of oranges, bananas and orange juice," says Marilyn Kwan, an epidemiologist at the University of California, Berkeley.

An orange provides vitamins and fibre, and citrus fruits boost the immune system and fight the growth of tumours. The latest study finds consuming citrus fruits could cut the risk of mouth, larynx and stomach cancers by up to 50 per cent. These cancers alone kill more than 8,000 Britons a year. Researcher Dr Katrine Baghurst said: 'Citrus fruits protect the body through their antioxidant properties and by strengthening the immune system, inhibiting tumour growth and normalising tumour cells. 'There is strong scientific evidence to show that these protective attributes can reduce the risk of cancer.

Arthritis

New research from the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition finds that enjoying a daily glass of freshly squeezed orange juice can greatly lower your risk of developing rheumatoid arthritis. Data collected by the European Prospective Investigation of Cancer Incidence (EPIC)-Norfolk study, a population-based, prospective study of over 25,000 subjects, illustrated that study participants with the highest daily intake of the carotenoids, zeaxanthin and Â-cryptoxanthin, had a much lower risk of developing rheumatoid arthritis compared to individuals consuming the least of these beneficial phytonutrients. Those whose intake of zeaxanthin was the highest were 52% less likely to develop rheumatoid arthritis, while those with the highest intake of cryptoxanthin had a 49% reduction in risk.

The word of the LORD came again to Zechariah: “This is what the LORD Almighty said: ‘Administer true justice; show mercy and compassion to one another. Do not oppress the widow or the fatherless, the foreigner or the poor. Do not plot evil against each other’ (Zech 7:8-10).

Orange Juice

All citrus trees are of the single genus, Citrus, and remain largely interbreedable; that is, there is only one "superspecies" which includes grapefruits, lemons, limes, and oranges.

Nevertheless, names have been given to the various members of the genus, oranges often being referred to as Citrus sinensis and Citrus aurantium.

Fruits of all members of the genus Citrus are considered berries because they have many seeds, are fleshy, soft, and derive from a single ovary. An orange seed is called a pip. The white thread-like material attached to the inside of the peel is called pith.
