FENNEL, OR AS IT IS KNOWN by its scientific name, Foeniculum Vulgare, is widely used around the world in mouth fresheners, toothpastes, desserts, antacids and in many delicious dishes. It is one of the primary ingredients of absinthe, an anise-flavoured spirit derived from herbs.

Fennel belongs to the Umbellifereae family and is therefore closely related to parsley, carrots, dill and coriander. Like similar spices, fennel contains a unique combination of phytonutrients. These include the flavonoids rutin, quercitin, and various kaempferol glycosides, and they give it strong antioxidant activity.

As a very good source of fiber, fennel bulb may help to reduce elevated cholesterol levels. Beside the fiber content, fennel is a very good source of folate, a B vitamin that is necessary for the conversion of a dangerous molecule called homocysteine into other, benign molecules. At high levels, homocysteine, which can directly damage blood vessel walls, is considered a risk factor for heart attack or stroke. Fennel is also a good source of potassium, a mineral that helps lower high blood pressure, another risk factor for stroke and heart attack.

Cancer Protection

The most interesting phytonutrient compound in fennel, however, may be anethole. This is the primary component of its volatile oil. In animal studies, the anethole in fennel has repeatedly been shown to reduce inflammation and to help prevent the occurrence of cancer. Researchers have also proposed a biological mechanism that may explain these anti-inflammatory and anticancer effects. This involves the shutting down of a intercellular signaling system called tumor necrosis factor (or TNF)-mediated signaling. By shutting down this signaling process, the anethole in fennel prevents activation of a potentially strong gene-altering and inflammation-triggering molecule called NF-kappaB. The volatile oil has also been shown to be able to protect the liver of experimental animals from toxic chemical injury.

A large crowd of his disciples was there and a great number of people from all over Judea, from Jerusalem, and from the coast of Tyre and Sidon, who had come to hear him and to be healed of their diseases. Those troubled by evil spirits were cured, and the people all tried to touch him, because power was coming from him and healing them all

Joni's Testimony

Ten years ago, Joni Olive-Badalian fought cancer and won--with prayer and Juicing. She had surgery and a little chemo, but the doctor said her cancer was gone prior to this. The rest was so that it never returned. He then asked her husband George, "What denomination of faith are you?"

Concerns

It is common knowledge that too much anything is not always good. With Fennel, too much can be harmful. Certain components of essential oils such as Anethol, and few chemicals present in fennel, besides being very beneficial, can be dangerous if ingested in over-dose, The compounds which can kill bacteria and microbes in low doses can be harmful for you as well. It can induce trouble in breathing, increase palpitations and make heart beats irregular and also neurotic problems.

Women who are pregnant or nursing should not consume fennel or fennel seed since fennel can stimulate the uterus.

Fennel has been shown to impair the absorption of the antibiotic ciprofloxacin (Cipro) and therefore would interfere similarly with other fluoroquinolone antibiotics. Consuming fennel can also interfere with Warfarin (coumadin) and other blood-thinning therapy since it is a source of a plant coumarin.
