Cancer Protection

Onions, rich in sulfides, provide protection against tumor growth. In central Georgia where Vidalia onions are grown, mortality rates from stomach cancer are about one-half the average level for the United States. Greece has found a high consumption of onions, garlic and other allium herbs are protective against stomach cancer. Western Yellow, New York Bold, and Northern Red onions have the richest concentration of flavonoids and phenolics. They have the greatest antioxidant and anti-proliferative activity of 10 onions tested. The consumer trend to increasingly purchase the less pungent, milder onion varieties may not be the smartest decision, since the onions with a stronger flavor and higher astringency have been shown to be superior health-promoting varieties. Research calculating flavonoid intake in 66,940 women of the Nurses Health Study between 1984 and 2002 revealed that women, whose diets provided the most kaempferol, had a 40% reduction in risk of ovarian cancer, compared to women eating the least kaempferol-rich foods. In addition to onions, foods richest in kaempferol include tea (nonherbal), broccoli, curly kale, leeks, spinach, and blueberries. Int J Cancer. 2007 Apr 30; Am J Clin Nutr. 2004 May;79(5):727-47.

Diabetes

A higher consumption of onion lowers the level of glucose found during oral or intravenous glucose tolerance tests. The evidence suggests that allyl propyl disulfide is responsible for this effect and lowers blood sugar levels by increasing the amount of free insulin available. By competing with insulin, (a disulphide), it occupies the sites in the liver where insulin is inactivated. This increases the amount of insulin available to usher glucose into cells. Chromium in onion helps the diabetic's cells respond appropriately to bringing down the insulin level and improve glucose tolerance.

Blood Pressure

Quercetin, a compound associated with onions, may reduce blood pressure by an average of five millimitres of mercury, indicates new research. In the study, said to be the first to report the blood pressure-lowering activity of this flavonol, found a daily 730 milligram supplement of quercitin led to significant reductions in the blood pressure of 22 people with high blood pressure (hypertension).

The Common Cold

Onion has also very beneficial effects in curing the respiratory congestion associated with the common cold. Quercitin and other flavonoids found in onions, alongside vitamin C, help kill harmful bacteria, making onions a great addition to Chicken Soup during cold and flu season. George Washington used onions as a cure for the common cold. If he had a cold, Washington said he ate a hot roasted onion before bed.

Inflamation and Pain

Many anti-inflammatory agents in onions are helpful in reducing the severity of pain, the swelling of osteo and rheumatoid arthritis and the allergic inflammatory response of asthma. Both onions and garlic contain compounds that inhibit lipoxygenase and cyclooxygenase (the enzymes that generate inflammatory prostaglandins and thromboxanes), thus dramatically reducing inflammation. The Onion's anti-inflammatory effects are due not only to their vitamin C and quercitin, but to other interactive components called isothiocyanates.

Boost Bone Health

Milk is known for bone health, however, Onions also help maintain healthy bones. A compound newly identified in onions with the long complex name of gamma-L-glutamyl-trans-S-1-propenyl-L-cysteine sulfoxide, or GPCS for short, inhibits the activity of osteoclasts (the cells that break down bone). The more GPCS given, research has shown, the more the bone breakdown action of osteoclasts was inhibited. This is especially beneficial for women, who are at an increased risk for osteoporosis during menopause. Fosamax, the drug usually prescribed to prevent excessive bone loss, works in a similar manner, by destroying osteoclasts, so they do not break down bone. Potential negative side effects of Fosamax include irritation of the upper gastrointestinal mucosa, acid regurgitation, esophageal ulcers and erosions. Potential negative side effects of eating onions: onion breath. Surely, onions are a great creation from God!

Concerns

Onions are toxic to dogs. Onion toxicity causes a Heinz body anemia. Heinz bodies are small bubble-like projections which protrude from a red blood cell and can be seen when the cells are stained. Onions are only one of the substances which can cause Heinz body anemia. Other substances such as Acetominophen (Tylenol) and benzocaine-containing topical preparations can also cause Heinz body anemia in the dog. The cat is even more susceptible. I strongly recommend NO ONIONS for dogs or cats. There is no benefit and certainly there is the potential to cause harm. Among common foods, other significant toxicity that I can think of are from dogs eating grapes and raisins or chocolate.

Fast Facts on Onion Research

Rui Hai Liu, associate professor of food science, is seen with several onion varieties next to a rotary evaporator, which is used for antioxidant extraction, in his lab in Stocking Hall on Sept. 28. Nicola Kountoupes/University PhotographyCopyright © Cornell University

In the Cornell News Article, Onions Anti-Cancer Effects", dated October 7, 2004, the report stated: "Many onions are chock full of anti-cancer chemicals". ... However, certain varieties are particularly high in these compounds as well as more effective in inhibiting liver and colon cancer cell growth. ... Phenolics and flavonoids, like other antioxidants, help prevent cancer by mopping up cell-damaging free radicals and inhibiting the production of reactive substances that could damage normal cells."

Now, Dr. Liu has shown you how enormously valuable onions are in fighting cancer! He also says, "Onions are one of the richest sources of flavonoids in the human diet." Moreover, Liu points out. "Flavonoid consumption has been associated with a reduced risk of cancer, heart disease and diabetes. Flavonoids are not only anti-cancer but also are known to be anti-bacterial, anti-viral, anti-allergenic and anti-inflamatory." In my own personal opinion: Onions are wonderful, and it certainly answered all of my questions about how the 100 mice were all healed from cancer, and that helped me when I remembered that research study, and I juiced Onions and I can testify that it worked for me....
