THE MANGO IS A fruit indigenous to the Indian subcontinent, mango belongs to the genus Mangifera, consisting of numerous species of tropical fruiting trees in the flowering plant family Anacardiaceae.

The word mango comes from the Portuguese manga, which is probably derived from the Malayalam (manna; pronounced "manga"). The word's first recorded attestation in a European language was a text by Ludovico di Varthema in Italian in 1510, as Manga; the first recorded occurrences in languages such as French and post-classical Latin appear to be translations from this Italian text.

Heart Health

Mangoes, being high in antioxidants and low in carbohydrates (although they contain around 15% good sugar), are an excellent source of beta-carotene (Vitamin A). They also contain Vitamin E and selenium which help protect against heart disease and also lower cholesterol.. Prevention from heart attack is also one of the benefit of mango.

Cancer Protection

Mangoes contain fiber, such as pectin. Pectin decreases the action of a protein called galectin 9, which is said to be present in cancerous cells and plays an important role in cancer. Also, the European Prospective Investigation of Cancer, has stated that the possibility of cancer of gastrointestinal tract can be reduced by the intake of lots of fiber.

A compound in mangoes called lupeol is believed to suppress the tumor cells of prostrate cancer. So far, this research initiative has turned up a great discovery: in laboratory experiments in Texas A&M University's AgriLife Research department mango fruit prevented or stopped cancer growth in certain breast and colon cell lines. The researchers tested mango polyphenol extracts in vitro on colon, breast, lung, leukemia and prostate cancers. Polyphenols are natural substances in plants and are associated with a variety of healthy compounds. Mango showed some impact on lung, leukemia and prostate cancers but was really effective on the most common breast and colon cancers. "What we found is that not all cell lines are sensitive to the same extent to an anticancer agent," the researcher said. "But the breast and colon cancer lines underwent apotosis, or programmed cell death. Additionally, we found that when we tested normal colon cells side by side with the colon cancer cells, that the mango polyphenolics did not harm the normal cells," she added. Further tests on the colon cancer lines revealed that normal cells weren't killed, so mango is not expected to be damaging in the body, Susanne said. "For cells that may be on the verge of mutating or being damaged, mango polyphenolics prevent this kind of damage," she added.

According to scientists at the Industrial Toxicology Research Centre (ITRC), mango pulp may provide an effective non-invasive method of treating prostrate cancer. After administering mango pulp into mice affected with cancer, scientists, investigating the healing components of the fruit, found that the tumor in the mice was radically suppressed. The scientists believe that a chemical compound found in mango called "lupeol" is the reason for the suppression of tumor cells in the mice.

See now that I myself am He!
There is no god besides me.
I put to death and I bring to life,
I have wounded and I will heal,
and no one can deliver out of my hand.
(Deut. 32:39)

Mango Basics

Mangoes have been cultivated in the Indian subcontinent for thousands of years and reached East Asia between the 5th–4th century BC. By the 10th century AD, cultivation had begun in East Africa, coming later to Brazil, West Indies and Mexico, where an appropriate climate allows its growth. The 14th century Moroccan traveler, Ibn Battuta, reported it at Mogadishu.

Mango is now cultivated in most frost-free tropical and warmer subtropical climates; nearly half of the world's mangoes are cultivated in India alone. Mango is also being grown in Andalusia, Spain (mainly in Malaga province), which is one of the few places in mainland Europe that allow growth of tropical plants and fruit trees.

Other cultivators include North, South and Central America, the Caribbean, south, west and central Africa, Australia, China, Pakistan, Bangladesh, and Southeast Asia. Though India is the largest producer of mangoes, it accounts for less than one percent of the international mango trade, consuming most of its own output.

Dwarf or semi-dwarf varieties serve as ornamental plants and can be grown in containers.
